MARCHING TO FIGHT PROSTATE CANCER

- By Tom Blackett

THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER joined forces with the National League and the fight against prostate cancer this week, tackling a walking marathon in and around the city of Leeds.

Prostate cancer has become the third biggest cancer killer in the UK and over the past 20 years the rate of fatalities has been increasing as advances in better treatments haven’t kept pace with the growing older population.

On Tuesday, The NLP’s editor Alex Narey walked with the National League’s chief executive Michael Tattersall, as well as Kevin Webber, who was given a terminal diagnosis with the disease three years ago. Since then, Kevin, with Prostate Cancer UK’s ‘March for Men’ campaign, has risen over £350,000 to raise awareness through a mix of half-marathons, marathons and the daunting marathon des sables (Sahara Marathon taking in 156 miles over six days no less!).

The charity has long links with football and sports-mad Kevin, a keen AFC Wimbledon fan, is just one of a huge number of people to have tackled the disease headon via the ‘March for Men’ campaign.

Tuesday’s walk took over 30 walkers out of the city via Headingley and through nearby Cookridge and Horsforth before turning back for the final eight miles along the Leeds and Liverpool canal.
