JAKE IS JUST WRIGHT FOR US – GRAY

- By Hugo Varley

NATIONAL League North side York City have completed the signing of striker Jake Wright, after the 21-year-old chose to leave local rivals Harrogate Town.

The former Sheffield United forward found the net six times last season as Harrogate made a surprise run to promotion from National League North.

This will be Wright’s second spell at Bootham Crescent after the striker spent time on loan with York two seasons ago.

York manager Martin Gray said: “He has won a promotion and had a taste of success which is important. I did a lot of work at the back end of the season, collating as much information as possible from Sheffield United, and he comes with a glowing reference.

“He caught the eye against us last season and scored in the game at Bootham Crescent. He has good energy, his all-round game is good, and he is a great finisher. His goals-togame ratio with Harrogate last season was very high.”

While Wright has departed, Harrogate believe they have the ideal replacement in striker Aaron Williams, who has joined from from FA Trophy winners Brackley Town.

Williams enjoyed a prolific season for the Saints in National League North, finding the net 20 times as Brackley finished up in the play-off positions.

The 24-year-old, who has been capped at England C level, has had Football League experience with Walsall, Peterborough and Newport County.

Williams’ Brackley lost 3-0 to Harrogate in last term’s play-off final.

He said: “It’s a club on the up so it was an easy decision for me to make and after speaking to the gaffer (Simon Weaver), I couldn’t wait to get my signature on the dotted line.”
