FOWLER HAS HIS PERFECT MATCH...

- By Matt Badcock

LEE FOWLER reckons him and new Nuneaton Borough boss Nicky Eaden are a perfect match.

Former Huddersfield, Forest Green, Wrexham, Fleetwood and Crawley Town midfielder Fowler will join Eaden as assistant manager at the National League North club.

It’s the 35-year-old’s first formal role on a management team and he is looking to learn from the ex-Kettering and Peterborough assistant.

“I went into Tamworth last season to help my brother (Mike Fowler) out, but in terms of my first gig this is it and I’m looking forward to it,” Fowler told The NLP.

“I’ve been in football since I was 14 and took my badges when I was 30. I’ve had opportunities and interviews, but I’ve been waiting for the right chance.

“I’ve been scouting – I worked for Craig Harrison at Hartlepool, managers and agents ring me for opinions about teams and players. I want to go and do the rest of my badges but it’s a natural thing that’s embedded in me.

“Myself and Nicky will work well together. I enjoyed playing under him when he was at Kettering with Coops (manager Mark Cooper). The blend will be good because he’s quite laid back, and I’m intense in terms of coaching and we’ll demand a lot.

“I’m going to be learning a lot from him. Nicky’s been a coach for many years and I’d be daft not to ask him questions. I’ve got my own thinking of how I want to coach, so it’s good for me and Nicky. We’re both hungry and eager to work hard.”

The pair have already been busy, signing Miles Addison, Owain Jones and former Wrexham right-back Curtis Obeng.

“If we create the right environment they’ll go on the pitch and be happy and play well,” Fowler said. “If it’s not correct off the field and around the building, then we won’t win games.

“We’ve got core values of hard work and enjoying it. We’re not going to have millions of meetings or meetings for a meeting, we’re going to strip it back. Mal Purchase, the fitness coach, is coming in as well. He was with Dean Saunders at Wrexham, Doncaster and Crawley, which is massive for us.

“We want a team we can sit on the side and be proud of and that’s why we’re signing players who will represent me and Nicky.”
