Clubs strengthen for new term

- By David Richardson

BILLERICAY Town owner Glenn Tamplin says the pressure of them being the National League South title favourites has led to him signing two more players.

Striker Adam Coombes was the first to be unveiled, the 27year-old joining from Welling where he scored 20 goals in 24 appearances.

Then ahead of their preseason friendly at Maidstone on Friday night, Tamplin announced the addition of former Arsenal, Ipswich, Bristol City and QPR striker Jay Emmanuel-Thomas – although both the club and player followed this up denying a deal had been completed.

Meanwhile, Welling have filled the void by signing Danny Mills on a season-long loan from Ebbsfleet. The striker scored 58 times in two seasons for Wings boss Steve King at Whitehawk, who also signed two more of his former players in midfielders David Ijaha and Arnaud Mendy.

Ian Evatt is continuing to lay the foundations for the new season at Barrow by bringing in midfielder Lee Molyneux. The 29-year-old spent last season at both Guiseley and Chorley, helping the Magpies reach the National League North play-offs.

Heading out of Holker Street is goalkeeper Steve Arnold, who has landed a move to League One side Shrewsbury under John Askey, and player-coach Grant Holt, mutually terminating his contract due to “the pressures of travel and the new strategic direction of the club”.

Eastleigh have added Bristol City youngster George Dowling on loan until the new year, while Burton Albion have allowed promising striker Marcus Dinanga to spend the season at Hartlepool.

AFC Fylde have signed 31year-old Joe Cardle from Scottish Championship side Dunfermline. The midfielder has signed a two-year deal and returns to the Fylde coast where he was born.

Alan Dowson’s rebuild at Woking is drawing to a close with the signing of forwards Jake Hyde and Greg Luer. Hyde, a former England C international, was at Maidenhead last season and has made over 130 appearances in the Football League for Barnet, York and Stevenage.

Boost

Luer, 23, spent three years at Hull where he made eight senior appearances including three in the Championship with loans spells at Stevenage, Port Vale and Scunthorpe.

Maidstone have been handed a big boost by re-signing winger Jamar Loza. The Jamaican international has committed for another year along with midfielder Ollie Muldoon after both proved their fitness.

After narrowly missing out on the National South playoffs last season, St Albans manager Ian Allinson has captured the signing of striker David Moyo from league rivals Hemel Hempstead. “This is a real boost for us to get David on board after what has been an impressive summer within the camp,” said Allinson.

Grant Roberts has rejoined Boston United having reached the play-offs in both 2015 and 2016 before he suffered a serious knee injury.

Manager Craig Elliott has also signed 22-year-old striker Andre Johnson after impressing during a trial period where he found the net in friendlies against Basford and Tadcaster this summer.
