REBELS YELL AS SEADOGS RUN OUT OF LEGS

- By Andrew Davies

FC UNITED of Manchester came out on top in the battle of the two fan-owned clubs – although they were pushed all the way by their hosts from the league below.

Things started brightly for Scarborough Athletic and a good spell of pressure was rewarded when striker James Walshaw headed home a cross from Leon Scott on 10 minutes.

The visitors then responded with a spell of their own, first a Jack Banister shot was saved well by Tommy Taylor and then Chris Lynch sent a left-footed shot from the edge of the box curling over the crossbar.

But on 40 minutes the visitors were level when a corner to the far post was headed back across goal and Rebels’ new signing Kurt Willoughby was on hand to head home to send the teams in level at the break.

Scarborough, preparing for life back at Step 3 next season in the Evo-Stik Premier Division, began the second half in the same manner as they did the first and they regained their lead six minutes into the restart.

Taylor angled a superb long ball out to winger Wayne Brooksby, who drove towards goal and bent his shot around the outstretched Lloyd Allinson.

But back came the National League North Rebels and Tom Greaves’ side were level inside five minutes later – captain Harry Winter sending an excellent shot over the Boro keeper into the far corner.

And within minutes they completed the turnaround on the hour mark when a weak header back was seized upon by Willoughby, who coolly rounded the keeper and slotted home, leaving no way back for the hosts.
