ALFIE’S ON THE SPOT AS HAWKS SWOOP

- By Trevor Brock

ALFIE Pavey struck twice from the spot as National League new boys Havant & Waterlooville gained a morale-boosting victory over Wycombe – and earned the praise of Chairboys boss Gareth Ainsworth.

New signing Pavey twice beat Ryan Allsop from the spot in the first half as the Hawks established a two-goal lead which was thoroughly deserved.

In the first action of note, Wycombe’s Nathan Tyson capitalised on sloppy defensive play to hit a first-time cross which Andreas Robinson headed away with Adebayo Akinfenwa ready to pounce.

The Hawks were without defensive kingpin Paul Robinson for 12 minutes as a stray elbow forced him off to have five stitches put in a cut above the eye.

Whilst he was off the field, the Hawks took the lead on ten minutes. Anthony Stewart brought down Andreas Robinson and Pavey easily beat Allsop from the spot.

Wycombe hit back strongly and a link-up between Akinfenwa and Craig Mackail-Smith saw a shot deflected into the side netting.

Allsop was the busier of the keepers as Pavey struck another fierce shot following a Bradley Tarbuck right-wing cross.

Six minutes before the interval, the Hawks were awarded a second penalty as Nicke Kabamba was felled with a tackle from behind by Adam El-Abd. Pavey hit his penalty into the opposite corner.

In the second half, Wycombe’s Paris CowanHall poked a simple chance wide and sub Nick Freeman hit a low shot into the side netting.

Wycombe manager Ainsworth said: “Havant played extremely well. They were sharper than us in the first half.”

Hawks boss Lee Bradbury said: “It was an excellent workout for us and sets us up nicely for our final friendly this coming Friday against AFC Wimbledon.”
