LANCERS ARE IN SEVENTH HEAVEN

- By Adrian Heath

CHARLIE Pitcher scored four goals as Lancing won an incredible ten-goal thriller against Greenwich Borough at the DGS Marine Stadium.

An incredible performance from the striker saw him net four times and assist all three of Lancing’s other goals as they stunned their higher-league opponents. Lancing were beaten 2-1 by Greenwich in the FA Cup back in 2014 and history looked to be repeating itself when Laurent Mendy opened the scoring. Mendy fired the hosts, who have never gone beyond the fourth qualifying round, in front on 24 minutes but the game’s standout performer Pitcher levelled for the visitors just three minutes later. The striker, who also found the net against Haywards Heath Town in the extra preliminary round, then put his side ahead with 35 minutes played. Matt Daniel extended Lancing’s lead prior to half-time. Pitcher nearly had his third on 50 minutes but after his effort was saved Jack Rowe-Hurst made it 4-1.

Pitcher wasn’t to be denied his hat-trick for long though as he grabbed his treble on 55 minutes before adding a fourth almost immediately. Daniel made it seven for the Yellows just before the hourmark before Lancing took their foot off the gas and conceded twice in the latter stages. Timileyin Toluwanile got Greenwich Borough’s second on 60 minutes before sub-Teshuane Tyreece Walters managed another consolation effort before the end. Lancing will go into the hat for the next round full of confidence but are still some way short of their best run in the cup – they reached the fourth qualifying round in 1952-53.
