LILYWHITES SPOIL PARTY

- By David Lawrence

HARBOROUGH Town’s big day ended in disappointment as they were knocked out of the FA Cup by visitors Cambridge City.

The United Counties League side, who opened their impressive 4G pitch ahead of the tie, almost took the tie to a replay though after Aaron Preston handed them a lifeline nine minutes from time.

James Hall and Ebby Nelson-Addy had earlier steered the Evo-Stik Central Division One outfit into a two-goal lead.

But the visitors held on against a late onslaught to book their place in the draw for the first qualifying round.

They will be joined by Trafford, who were 4-1 winners at AFC Darwen, Matty Bryan with a brace, while North West Counties Premier leaders Runcorn Town made it through thanks to a 3-1 win at Penistone Church.

Romulus were convincing 4-0 winners at home to Newcastle Town, where Mitch Piggon netted twice, and they will be joined in the next round by fellow Midland League Premier side Stourport Swifts, who came from behind to beat Sporting Khalsa, both goals coming from Drew Canavan. Loughborough University were involved in a six-goal thriller, Joe Boachie scoring an injury time equaliser in the 3-3 draw with Northern Counties East Premier outfit Cleethorpes Town. Knaresborough Town were among the most convincing winners from that league as they stormed to a 5-1 win at home to Blyth.

Joshua Garbutt helped himself to a first half hattrick, with the others coming from Sam Cook and Stephen Bromley.

League rivals Staveley MW were 3-0 winners at home to Lutterworth Town. Meanwhile, Garforth Town edged out Bridlington Town 2-1, with Albert Ibrahimi scoring a last minute winner. Anstey Nomads stormed to a 4-1 win at home to Clipstone. Eleswhere, Quorn just edged out South Normanton Athletic 3-2, with Steve Hart helping himself to a hat-trick for the Leicestershire side.
