DRAGONS STAGE A FANTASTIC FIGHTBACK

- By Nick Wilson

A PHYSICAL battle led to a stunning ending at the Camrose as Basingstoke mounted a miraculous, if slightly fortunate, comeback against Wimborne despite being a man down.

The first half largely went the visitors’ way, Jack Lovell freed by a quick one-two to finish a clinical counter attack inside four minutes.

The hosts snatched an equaliser against the run of play just before the break, Sam Smart turned and set Zidan Akers free to drill home.

Dean Stow was sent off 20 minutes from time for tugging back Connor Young as he burst through on goal and Wimborne eventually made the man advantage tell as Young’s shot took a cruel deflection off Harry Philby to loop beyond Colm McAdden.

It looked like game over but two minutes into stoppage time, the ten men of Basingstoke were awarded a penalty from a corner, Billy Maybury the man penalised.

Substitute Callum Bunting stepped up, his first effort beaten back to him by Gerard Benfield but he coolly swept the rebound in with his left foot to seemingly secure a point.

However, the home team weren't done though and Smart teed up Dan Collier to fire home from 20 years into the bottom corner to steal a win.
