TANNERS HIT THE ROVERS FOR SIX
LEATHERHEAD refused to be on the receiving end of a FA Cup upset as they experienced the joy of six against Haverhill Rovers.
Rovers had already dumped higherleague Maldon & Tiptree out of the competition but as soon as Leatherhead's Shaun Okojie calmly slotted his team into an eighth-minute lead, it always looked as though the home team’s memorable journey was going to end.
To their credit, Rovers battled hard after falling behind and created a good chance for attacking midfielder Ben Bradley in the 22nd minute but Leatherhead goalkeeper Zaki Oualah spread himself well to make the save.
The goal that effectively ended the tie as contest came five minutes before the break as the Bostik League Premier Division outfit, who reached the second round last season before exiting at the hands of Wycombe Wanderers, doubled their lead via Robert Cullen’s half-volley.
Captain Elliot Benyon then took centre stage, scoring twice within the opening 12 minutes of the second half. His first was a near-post flick, while the second was a curling effort from the edge of the box that nestled inside goalkeeper James Philp's left-hand post.
Gregory made it five after 80 minutes from the penalty spot and the same player completed the scoring in the dying embers, cutting inside from the left and finding the bottom corner thanks to a deflection that left Philp helpless. STAR MAN: Robert Cullen (Leatherhead) ENTERTAINMENT: ★★★★★
