GOZIE HAS GOT THE GO-AHEAD TO HELP LIFT WOOD

- By Jon Couch

GOZIE UGWU says ending his disappointing brief spell at Chesterfield and signing for Boreham Wood has given him a new lease of life.

The 25-year-old former Dunfermline Athletic, Yeovil Town and Wycombe Wanderers striker enjoyed a terrific season at Woking in 2016-17, scoring 21 for the Cards in Non-League’s top-flight.

But since joining Chesterfield last summer in League Two, Ugwu has not scored for the club and he was made available for transfer by manager Martin Allen.

After a national League scramble for his signature, Ugwu has now joined Luke Garrard’s Boreham Wood until the end of the season and can’t wait to lead their promotion push.

“I am delighted. It feels like a fresh start and I am looking forward to enjoying my football again and scoring goals,” Ugwu said.

“[Boreham Wood] are a good team who play good football. I like to do a bit of both as a striker; I like to go in behind and I can also show and come to feet and I think that I have got a good eye for goal.

“I had a stint through injury and I think that I lost a bit of confidence during that period. I just want to get back to my best and get back to the person who I was and enjoying my football again. Playing games and scoring goals.”

Garrard added: “He is a 6”2’ powerhouse, who 18 months ago was ripping this league up with Woking. He has all the tools and I have seen it firsthand.”
