A DREAM DEBUT FOR WATERSIDERS

- By Tony Croft

BLACKFIELD & Langley’s first-ever game in the FA Trophy ended with a 30 win over Highworth

Town, despite a match that wasn’t as comfortable as the scoreline suggests.

Blackfield goalkeeper Lewis Noice made two very good saves early on but then a ball over the top allowed Rudy Plummer to run on and score past the keeper from just inside the area on 24 minutes.

Plummer doubled the lead with a superb looping shot from 20 yards and Sam Poole settled it with a stooping header from a corner at the death. Meanwhile, Kempston

Rovers secured an impressive 3-1 win away to

Barton Rovers thanks to a Jermaine Hall hat-trick.

Some sloppy marking from a corner allowed Hall a free header which was glanced home with aplomb before that man Hall was allowed the freedom of Barton to double Kempston’s advantage.

Hall pounced to lob Barton keeper Charlie Jones and complete his hat-trick in the 79th minute, although the hosts

did get a consolation goal with three minutes remaining when Drew Phillips slammed home from close range.

Kidsgrove and Grays also recorded away wins as they beat Coleshill 2-1 and Felixstowe & Walton 3-1 respectively, while Robert O’Toole and Tyrell Richardson-Brown both netted for Horsham in their 2-1 road victory over Bury Town.

Droylsden also claimed a place in the Preliminary Round as they beat league rivals Widnes 2-1.

Widnes took the lead after 23 minutes, George Lomax converting from close range after being set up by Chris Lomax but Droylsden were level five minutes later when Michael Brewster converted from the penalty spot.

The Bloods settled the tie midway through the second half, Sefton Gonzales beating the Widnes offside trap and setting up Phil Marsh to tap home from six yards. Atherton Collieries beat Runcorn Linnets 4-2, Aveley were 3-1 victors against Tooting & Mitcham, while Cleethorpes and Hastings both won 3-1 against Mossley and Waltham Abbey respectively. A 75th-minute penalty netted by Ashley Lodge, after Rhys Rabess had been toppled by Billy Holland, was enough for Egham to win 1-0 at AFC Sudbury, as Bedford and Cheshunt will go again in midweek after a 1-1 draw. Stuart Cattell, David Murphy and Callum McNish were the home scorers as Didcot beat Thamesmead 3-1, while L’Heureux Menga’s run and shot – on which Danny Norton got the final touch – gave Witham Town some cheer with a 1-0 win over Coggeshall Town. Finally, Whyteleafe hammered Bowers & Pitsea 4-1, while Slimbridge drew 1-1 with Winchester, the same scoreline as Uxbridge against Chalfont St Peter.
