SHOTS ARE SHOOTING ON UP AFTER ADAM SHOW

- By Steve Gibbs

ALDERSHOT TOWN 3 FC HALIFAX TOWN 0 ALDERSHOT TOWN surged to another comprehensive home victory to extend FC Halifax Town’s winless run to eight – but the Shaymen were left to wonder what might have been.

The Shots effectively had the game sown up in the first quarter, thanks to Adam May and Adam McDonnell, but had Halifax taken one of several decent chances the hosts may have at least been made to work harder for the points.

“It’s that cliché, that goals change games,” admitted manager Jamie Fullarton, who remained phlegmatic over their current form.

“We were punished for not taking chances, and I think we can do better. Whilst I felt we underperformed, individually and collectively, they’ve had three shots and scored three goals.

“I believe in what we’re doing. You’re looking at behaviours and performances (as much as results). The players trust each other, and I’m saying the same things to them as I was when we were top of the league at the end of August.”

The Shots soon strode into a domineering lead, but not before loanee Kyle Wootton headed James Berrett’s corner over the bar.

Yet two well-worked goals confirmed Aldershot Town’s ascendancy. On eight minutes, the dynamic McDonnell fed a deft pass through to Jake Gallagher on the right side of the penalty area, and his pullback was swept into the net by the onrushing May. McDonnell then hooked the ball past Sam Johnson, as Matt McClure continued a flowing counter-attack by breaking down to the left to supply a fine cross to the far-post, and the Shots were in control. Within minutes, though, Nathan Clarke had powered a free header wide of goal, and Dayle Southwell’s glancing header dropped past the post. Johnson then superbly tipped May’s fierce drive over the bar but a couple of half-chances seconds before the break gave Halifax a modicum of hope. That lasted all of 100 seconds, as Johnson’s weak punch, in meeting Marvin McCoy’s cross allowed Gallagher to bounce a mis-hit shot into the far corner. Southwell rounded Jake Cole on 51 minutes, but his angled shot was brilliantly cleared off the line by the sliding Lewis Kinsella, and his 20-yard drive grazed the top of the bar soon after, but long before Jordan Preston’s shot also clipped the crossbar, with 13 minutes left, the game was up. “We played very well,” said Gary Waddock. “But we’ve played well over the last few weeks as well. We know we’ve got some good players. Slowly but surely they’re showing everybody that.” STAR MAN: Adam McDonnell (Aldershot) ATT: 1,625 ENTERTAINMENT: ★★★★★ REFEREE: Sam Allison 7/10
