ROYALS’ KINGLY TRIUMPH

- By Phil Smith

SUTTON Coldfield Town recorded a second win of the season with a stunning 4-0 victory over bottom-of-the-league Kidlington.

Three second-half goals secured a rousing win for the Royals as Kidlington slipped to a seventh loss of the season.

In wet and windy weather, the visitors dominated possession in the early stages before defender Lee Smith was forced off through injury 15 minutes in.

In a game of few chances for either team, both sides struggled to break the deadlock in the first half as James Mutton rifled one over from short range.

But neat footwork from Jonathan Letford set up Kyle Delaney to find space out wide and shoot into the bottom corner for the opener shortly before halftime.

Ryan Nesbitt proved a constant threat for the Royals following the restart and he finally got his just rewards when he scooped up a loose ball on the edge of the area to fire across goal and double the advantage for Sutton Coldfield.

Letford slotted the third in impressive style with a jinking run into the area that eluded three Kidlington defenders before having the composure to fire across goal and shoot low and hard into the bottom corner.

Nesbitt capped off a fine performance for Neil Tooth’s men in added time with a neat side-footed shot that whizzed past Sam Warrell in goal for his second of the afternoon.

Promotion-chasers Welwyn Garden City fell to a fifth defeat of the campaign with a 3-1 away loss against midtable Aylesbury United.

The Evo-Stik Southern Division One Central sides kicked off at the Meadow with both sides looking to kickstart their seasons, despite the Citizens sitting just outside the play-off spots.

But it was Aylesbury who made the better start, controlling possession and keeping their opponents at a distance.

Their early pressure eventually told when

Benjamin Aghadiuno put Aylesbury in front with a fine finish into the net.

They doubled their advantage on the halfhour when exciting 18-year-old winger Max Hercules got in on the scoring act.

Hercules, the son of Aylesbury’s all-time leading appearancemaker and goalscorer Cliff, joined from Tring Athletic in the summer, and he slotted his third goal of the season with an impressive strike against their underperforming opponents.

Aaron Berry wrapped up the three points for the Ducks as the Welwyn Garden City defenders struggled to contain their Aylesbury opponents before the visitors pulled back a late consolation goal.

It was honours even at Haywood Way as

Aylesbury recorded a 2-2 draw with Barton Rovers.

Steph Bailey should have put the visitors in front in the early stages when his free header flew high over the crossbar.

And the Rovers player was made to rue his miss on the 20-minute mark when striker Martin Griggs beat his marker to slot home in his first game since returning to the club.

The Moles were 2-0 up only minutes later when Aaron King rose highest to meet a Reece Bayliss corner, slamming the ball into the net for an impressive early two goal lead.

In an incredible end-toend opening passage, Barton pulled one back just a minute after King’s header when Garry Malone palmed away Victor Osubu’s strike but couldn’t keep out his follow-up.

Then on the cusp of half-time, Rovers’ Jimmy Hartley brought the away side level with an impressive individual run that culminated in the winger curling the ball into the bottom left-hand corner.

Aylesbury went in search of a third and King missed a chance to claim the winner late on.
