BAYERN WINGER LANDS A RUNCORN RUN-OUT

- By Robin Jones

RUNCORN Town have pulled off something of a transfer coup after landing former Bayern Munich winger Dale Jennings.

Jennings began his career as a schoolboy with Liverpool before signing for Tranmere Rovers at the age of 15.

After 29 appearances for Tranmere, Jennings was named League One Apprentice of the Year at the Football League Awards in 2011 and became one of the country’s hottest properties.

That summer, he shunned the attentions of Premier League clubs to sign for the German giants, making 36 appearances for their reserve side, but his career was hampered by a serious knee ligament injury for six months.

He returned to England and joined Barnsley in a £250,000 fee and made 51 appearances for the Tykes before signing for MK Dons at the start of the 2015-16 season.

Still only 25, he has been a free agent since he was released by MK Dons in February 2016 – and had been without a club ever since before the North West Counties Premier title chasers pounced.

Town boss Chris Herbert said: “I don’t think I need to tell anyone how big a signing this is for Runcorn Town.

“Dale is a top-drawer player who was at the very highest level in European football. He has lost his way somewhat, but I can tell is that he is desperate to resurrect his career.

“He is still desperate to get back in the Football League, and it is my job to get him there by getting him to perform for us.

“He wants to prove the doubters wrong and it was very refreshing to see and hear from someone who has been at one of the biggest clubs in the world at Bayern Munich.

“He is willing to take a huge risk, start at the very bottom to prove he still has what it takes.”
