WHITS RUN IS NOT YET AT AN END

- By Matt Ford

WHITSTABLE Town made it seven league matches unbeaten with a 2-0 win over Greenwich

Borough, a result that ensures their fine run of form continues into the month of October.

The win moves Town up to sixth in the table and only outside of the play-off places on goal difference as second-half goals from Stuart West and Stephen Smith proved sufficient to notch up another three points.

Not since the end of August have the Oysterboys tasted defeat in the Bostik League as they inflicted a second successive reverse for visitors Greenwich following on from the latter’s setback last time out at the hands of Phoenix Sports.

A fifth defeat in seven matches for Borough, though, means the contrast in fortunes could not be starker, with Greenwich mired in earlyseason relegation trouble, lying just one point off the foot of the table.

Lowly Three Bridges snapped a two-match losing spell and registered their first away league success of the season by overcoming Ashford

United 4-2. A brace from Ibby Akanbi spearheaded Bridges’ charge to a deserved win in Kent while a Tom Carlse own goal and Mason Doughty were also on target for the visitors. Two strikes from Ashford’s Sam Corne proved to be inconsequential.

While Ashford came into this encounter off the back of two straight draws, this could prove to be a vital three points as Three Bridges look to kick-start their own campaign.

The visitors were in control from the moment they wrestled the initiative of a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Akanbi after 11 minutes and a fortuitous second courtesy of the unfortunate Carlse 10 minutes before the break.

They had to wait until the final 10 minutes to make sure of the points, though, as Doughty added a third on 80 minutes and Akanbi doubled up with a minute remaining before Corne’s consolation. East Grinstead Town and Sevenoaks Town had to both make do with a share of the spoils after playing out a competitive 1-1 draw at East Court.

This was a contest that was always likely to be tightly contested, with East Grinstead coming into this clash off the back of three straight wins and Sevenoaks similarly unbeaten with two wins in their last three.

It was the Kent side, however, who struck the first blow in West Sussex when William JohnsonCole finished well after 15 minutes past Sheikh Ceesay in the Wasps goal.

The home side continued to plug away, however, and levelled proceedings nine minutes into the second half when striker George Landais buried his effort from the penalty spot.

Both sides pushed on in the hope of turning one point into three but were unable to find a way through as the game ended all-square. Thamesmead Town moved off the foot of the South East Division in pouring rain with just their second league win and first clean sheet of the season as they dispatched Guernsey 3-0 at Princes Park.

The home side led at half-time courtesy of Tariq Ossai's thunderous volley and they kicked on in the second-half to register a vital, yet emphatic victory.

The lead was doubled just before the hour through Trey Williams’ fourth of the season and the win was sealed when the experienced Richard Pacquette beat the offside trap to score with some aplomb.

It really wasn’t Guernsey’s day, as was highlighted when home goalkeeper Will Gormon produced a sensational reflex save late on to deny Liam Mahon’s header.

Defeat was the Channel Islanders’ fifth on the bounce as they are leapfrogged by Thamesmead who climb to 17th, with Guernsey finding themselves 19th in the table.
