DENTON HAS LAST LAUGH BUT WINLESS RUNS GO ON

FORMER FC Halifax striker Tom Denton scored an equaliser against his old side but couldn’t prevent the winless runs of both clubs extending further.

Big striker Denton was released by the Shaymen in the summer but got the last laugh on his former employers, powering home a 79th-minute header from Jerome BinnomWilliams’ cross after Matty Kosylo had given the Shaymen the lead ten minutes earlier.

“We equipped ourselves well with passion, fight and spirit, though we could have shown a bit more quality,” said Chesterfield manager Martin Allen.

“We need to be a hard to beat team, and we are. We don’t let anybody run us over.”

The Shaymen started the stronger but the better first-half chances fell to Chesterfield – new signing Alex Kiwomya going close to a debut goal but failing to hit the target after a good run by Tom Shaw.

Denton was clearly looking to make a statement on his first visit back to the Shay and went mighty close with a looping header from Sam Muggleton’s throw-in which came off the crossbar. As it was, it was Halifax who took the lead against the run of play. Johnson’s goal kick was headed on to Kosylo who, after beating the offside trap, rounded keeper Callum Burton and slotted home. But, ten minutes later, the Spireites hit back – halftime sub Zavon Hines cleverly back-heeling to BinnomWilliams and his cross was met by the head of Denton. Halifax almost stole the points in injury time when Wootton headed against the crossbar, but the result ensured Jamie Fullarton’s men seeking a first win since August 27, while Chesterfield are without a win now for two months.
