BAGS BRACE

- By Mark Doig

ON NON-LEAGUE day, two goals from Adam Coombes saw Welling to a hard earned victory over Slough Town

It was certainly not an easy three points and Welling manager Steve King admitted that his team made hard work of it after taking a second minute lead.

“It was a tough game.” he said. “We got three points without playing that well. We could have put the game to bed in the first half in my opinion.

“We lost our most influential player in Jack Jebb that was a big big loss for us. He’s had ten assists already and four goals. As soon as we lost him as a play-maker we changed the dynamics of the team.”

Coombes’ opener came in just the second minute. Jebb slung in a free kick that Coombes met with a thumping header in the six yard box ahead of goalkeeper Jack Turner.

It could have been two moments later when Jordan Gibbons broke through but Turner was out quickly to make a fine save.

That could have proved costly as Slough broke quickly and Manny William spun but shot high and wide when well placed.

Brad Goldberg was then sent clear by Coombes but his attempted curler into the top corner went just over then a further Welling chance went a-begging when Nassim L’Ghoul, a threat throughout was sent clear but shot just beyond the far post.

Brendan Kiernan jinked through but shot wide as Welling finished the half on top.

The game changed immediately after the break though and the Rebels levelled in the first minute when James Dobson was left unmarked at the far post to volley home.

Dobson curled wide after Matt Stevens had held it up well and Mark Nisbet headed wide when not well marked from a corner.

While temporarily down to ten men, Welling went ahead. Kiernan was pushed over by Hollis in the penalty area and Coombes stepped up to send Turner the wrong way. There might have been another penalty for Welling shortly after when Coombes appeared to be bundled over in the box but the referee was unimpressed.

There were no further alarms and Welling saw the game out to claim the three points

Jon Underwood, Slough’s joint manager, said “We didn’t play well in the first half. We didn’t play to our capabilities and they deserved to be in front. We were probably a little bit fortunate that we were only one down at half time.

“In the second half we were much better and got the goal early on.”
