JOHN’S STILL THE MAN FOR WESLEY

WESLEY FONGUCK has hailed the impact of John Still and his coaching team at Barnet which led to the midfielder’s England C call-up,

- writes DAVID RICHARDSON.

The 21-year-old has excelled for the Bees in their cautious start back in Non-League following relegation.

The vastly experienced Still returned to the club he managed 16 years ago this summer, bringing with him half a dozen players from Dagenham & Redbridge.

But Fonguck, a graduate from Barnet’s academy, has kept his place in midfield and added goals to his game with four already this season.

“One of my aims before the season was to score more, I have done that so far which I’m happy about,” he told The NLP. “As a team we’re not where we want to be at the moment, but there’s still a long way to go. We’ve had some good results so far.

“It’s always going to be hard with a new gaffer, new coaches, new ideas, I think now we’ve got used to it a bit more.

“The gaffer is different, he has different ideas, definitely a few new things. The coaches [Darren Currie and Junior Lewis] are good too. They’ve both played the game. It’s good to have people who have played telling you what to do as well.”

Barnet sat four points off the play-offs before yesterday’s blank Saturday but Fonguck got some minutes into his legs in midweek playing the full 90 in England’s win over Estonia.

“The setup with England is nice, everyone is friendly. It’s very nice to be recognised.”
