JOHNSON’S GULLS ARE SOARING YET AGAIN

- By Kevin Anderson

EASTBOURNE B 2 TORQUAY UNITED 4

TORQUAY United are still unbeaten under Gary Johnson after two late goals helped them overcome a tough Eastbourne test.

Hosts Eastbourne had earned a 1-0 interval lead, but two strikes in two minutes put United ahead before Dean Cox hit a fine equaliser. Jamie Reid snatched the victory with a penalty and added time effort.

Torquay looked sluggish early on as Borough poured forward with quick and fluent movement, Gulls keeper Shaun MacDonald performing heroics to keep out a double chance from Alfie Rutherford.

And it was no less than the Sports deserved when Rutherford latched on to Ryan Hall’s raking pass and turned the defence inside out for a 34th minute lead.

The Gulls came out with fresh pace and purpose after the break, Asa Hall hit a left-foot screamer to equalise on 54 minutes, and then Reid followed up Opanin Edwards’ parried shot to put Gulls ahead.

But Borough came back to equalise, Sergio Torres setting up Dean Cox’s exquisite topcorner strike.

Ryan Hall’s clumsy challenge, marginally a penalty, allowed Reid to reclaim the lead from the spot, and after some breathless moments on the Torquay barricades, Reid raced away to seal it in added time. STAR MAN: Asa Hall (Torquay) ENTERTAINMENT: ★★★★★
