HILLMEN SACK BOSSES

- By Yashas Mudumbai

GLOSSOP North End managerial duo Mark Canning and Andy Bishop left the club after ending up on the wrong side of a nine-goal thriller with Widnes.

The first half saw the two teams being evenly matched and that reflected in the way the score line developed.

The home side went ahead through Matthew Russell after an acrobatic assist from Andy Bishop.

This goal led to renewed confidence for Glossop, with Widnes goalkeeper Ryan Nield having to make several decent saves.

Despite that, Widnes equalised twice in the first half to remain in the contest, when it was arguable that the Hillmen should have been ahead.

The second half began in earnest for the visitors as striker Dale KorieButler completed a hattrick, and Jack Dunn consolidated that advantage for Widnes not long after.

Those two goals should have sprung the home side into action but instead, Widnes continued to attack and look for more, with Matty Chapman shooting over.

This attacking intent got its rewards as defender Philip Doran’s left-footed strike took a deflection to go past Glossop goalkeeper Russ Saunders.

Russell scored his second of the game to give hope of a miraculous comeback, but ben Hodkinson’s goal for Widnes ensured their 6-3 victory.

And after the game Bishop and Canning parted company with the club with them 19th in the table. In the Isthmian League,

Cheshunt rose to second in the South-Central division after comfortably beating Tooting & Mitcham United 3-0.

Two goals from substitute Ali Chantery and a strike from Ricky Sappleton, all of which happened in the last 20 minutes, ensured Cheshunt remained unbeaten at home.

The first half was a cagey affair, with the only incident of note being a 36th minute red card for Daryl Coleman for a tackle from behind. There were very few chances for either side and that meant both sides went into the break goalless.

The home side then rung the changes and bought both Chantery and Sappleton on early in the second half.

The 345 people who attended then saw a sense of urgency from the home side and Tooting & Mitcham United simply could not keep up with their counterparts in the last quarter of an hour as they conceded three goals in not a lot of time.

In the north division of the same league, the midtable clash between

Heybridge Swifts and Bury Town at the Aspen Waite Arena ended 2-0 to the home side.

Harrison Chatting, who would go on to be man of the match, scored in the 23rd minute to give the home side the lead.

Bury Town, who have now lost three away from home this season, could not get a stranglehold on the game and that was not helped by Ollie Fenn’s red card in just the 19th minute of the match.

With one less player for them on the pitch, the visitors were unable to hold onto the ball for extended periods of time and that was essentially their downfall.

Nicholas Brown then made them pay for Fenn’s mistake with a 90th minute goal to push the home side closer to the tophalf of the table. AFC Sudbury continued their good record in away matches this season, as they won 10 at Felixstowe & Walton United.

The away side started the match extremely bright and were unlucky to have not converted their plethora of chances in the opening period.

But Reece Harris made sure that his side would not be going back home with nothing as he struck a powerful left-foot shot past opposition goalkeeper Jack Spurling just before the half-time break.

AFC Sudbury continued their dominance in the match and made sure to close out any rare opportunity that United had.
