BARNEY DOES THE BUSINESS

Hayes clinch a thriller

IT’S not a game that will live long in the memory of either team in terms of quality but Hayes & Yeading will be the happier side as they secured passage into the next round of the FA Trophy thanks to a first half goal from Lee Barney.

It was a tight and tense affair, with both team contributi­ng to a pulsating encounter but it was the visitors who held firm to take the all-important and crucial win when it mattered most.

The first half started with a fast tempo as both sides had half chances on their respective goals.

Barking had the first chance of note as the ball fell to Emmanuel Ighorae but his volley flashed wide.

There was a scare for Barking as keeper Olajide failed to collect a corner but the defender on the line managed to scramble the ball away.

Hayes did take the lead after 31 minutes as Lewis Toomey beat Olajide to the ball before squaring to Lee Barney for a tap in.

The second half saw even less chances as both sides struggled with the wind Barking threw players forward as they attempted to get back in the game but they struggled to break down Hayes & Yeading who were unable to STAR MAN: Lee Barney (Hayes) ENTERTAINM­ENT: ★★★★★ break the home side down on the counter.

The final whistle bought an end to an uneventful second half and game in general but for Hayes they can celebrate progress to the next round.
