GERRING ENSURES WOKING MAKE IT THROUGH

- By Mark Doig

A LATE goal from Ben Gerring proved enough for Woking to knock ten-men Welling United out of the FA Cup.

Woking were made to dig deep as they had to produce a battling and professional performance to see off Welling.

Julien Anua’s harsh early second half dismissal made a big difference after Welling had enjoyed the better of a tight first half.

Although the Wings had the territorial advantage they struggled to created many clear cut chances. One excellent team move gave Anau an opportunity from wide but he shot across the face of goal. Then Craig Braham-Barrett went on a marauding run down the left wing but Danny Mills rose slightly too early and could only direct his header wide.

It became tougher for Welling after 58 minutes when Anau was dismissed for a second yellow card but although the hosts enjoyed more of the possession there was still little goalmouth action.

Max Kretzschmar had the first shot on target with 15 minutes remaining which Dan Wilks held comfortably but they did go ahead with 13 minutes remaining. Paul Hodges nodded in a half cleared cross and Gerring rose to guide his header home.

Craig Ross was called into action to make a good save from Brendan Kiernan who then headed wide.

Ross then made a great stop from Bradley Goldberg as Woking held on to claim their place in the FA Cup first round.
