Constable puts the shackles on Martyrs
MERTHYR will feel more than a touch aggrieved not to have taken any reward from this game, Beaconsfield grabbing the winner through substitute Brendan Matthew.
But the reality is the home side were undone by a combination of wonder saves from goalkeeper Ravan Constable and indecisive finishing.
Constable made a superb stop to keep out Lee Lucas’ low drive and saved point-blank at the feet of Tom Meechan.
Anthony Mendy lobbed over the bar on 16 minutes and then saw his shot on the turn touched on to the post by Joe Perry.
Beaconsfield struck the woodwork once more as half-time approached, Charlie Losasso’s shot bouncing back off the post into Perry’s arms.
Tom Meechan did have the ball in the net on 53 minutes but his header from Kerry Morgan’s cross was offside.
Constable made a stunning stop from Lucas again three minutes later before beating away Morgan’s angled drive.
Sixty seconds before Beaconsfield's winner, Meechan played in Ian Traylor but his shot went tamely into Constable’s midriff.
From the goalkeeper’s kick out, the ball was played into Matthew and rounded Perry to score.
