REBELS STAR HARRIS NETS STUNNER

- By Kevin Anderson

ONE of the goals of the season set Slough Town on course for the first round proper – an astonishing strike just six minutes in.

Ben Harris was still a yard inside his own half when he chanced an enormous shot at goal.

Sports keeper Mark Smith, well off his line and possibly dazzled in the low sun, stood motionless and disbelieving, as the ball sailed over him and into the net.

Slough held the lead through a patchy first half, with Borough rarely hurting them.

Alfie Rutherford came closest to levelling on the half hour, seizing on an awful back pass but planting his shot wide of the left post, while Sergio Torres had a great effort smothered by Jack Turner.

Sports came out with fresh energy for the second half, but Rebels struck lethally on 58 minutes to double the lead, James Dobson scudding a low drive across Smith and just inside the back post.

With 20 minutes left, the Sports were back it it. Kane Wills’ smart pass opened the Rebels defence, and Alfie Rutherford turned in a clever finish for 2-1.

And then Rutherford might have equalised, miscontrolling Smith’s long punt with only Turner to beat. But that proved Borough’s last real sight of goal as Slough assuredly saw the match out.
