New level is right up Richard’s Street

- By Hugo Varley

THEY may be in unchartered territory but Richard Fey’s Street side have adapted to life in Step 4 like a duck to water.

Fey’s side pulled off an extraordinary 26-match winning run on their way to the Western Premier League title last season, earning themselves a place in the eighth tier of English football for the first time in their history.

And it hasn’t stopped there, as a storming start to life in Southern League Central Division One saw Street climb to third before yesterday’s action.

“We have all been taken a bit by surprise with how quickly the lads have settled into Step 4 football” a delighted Fey told The NLP.

“If someone had told me over the summer that we would be in touching distance with the top of the table in November I would- n’t have believed them.

“Last season was an absolute dream and we created memories that would last a lifetime but we knew that this year was going to be far tougher.

“At the beginning of the campaign I sat down with the board and we decided that the main objective would simply be to stay in the division.

“We are well ahead of our target at the moment and to be honest with you I think that we are more than capable of at least finishing in mid-table.”

Despite such a promising start, Fey admits he is wary of the club becoming a victim of their own success.

“The one thing that I have to do now is to make sure that we guard against complacency,” he added.

“We haven’t lost many games and I need to make sure that the players never rest on their laurels.”
