Olympic take shine off the Diamonds

- By Paul Judd

RUSHALL Olympic gained only their second away win of the season as they produced a professional display to defeat AFC Rushden & Diamonds.

The hosts hit the post in the fourth minute when Jack Ashton's header came back off the upright, and Rushall threatened when Orrin Pendley was just unable to turn a loose ball home from close range.

Tyler Little also went close for the visitors when his curling freekick was brilliantly tipped away, but clear-cut chances were largely at a premium.

The away side though, took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Pendley thumped a header home from an inviting free-kick.

With so few successes this season, it would have been understandable to sit on that lead.

But Rushall doubled their advantage on the hour mark when Ashley Sammons latched onto a mistake from the home defence before firing low into the net.

Diamonds pressed and went close again through Ashton, who suffered with a day of bad luck on his home turf.

But the visitors produced a commanding and stoic defensive rearguard to shut out the hosts.

And in claiming the three points, this could be a victory to reignite a season that has struggled to get going up until this point. STAR MAN: Joe Hull (Rushall Olympic) ENTERTAINMENT: ★★★★★
