IT’S ALL OVER FOR LEGEND HEWSON AT REDS

- By Jon Couch

FANS’ favourite David Hewson says he no longer feels he is the right man to lead Workington after standing down as joint-manager this week.

The 35-year-old, who shared management duties with Lee Andrews, offered his resignation immediately after Tuesday night’s 2-0 FA Trophy replay defeat at Ramsbottom United.

Hewson has been an integral part of the Borough Park set-up for the last 15 years serving the club as a player, coach and, for the last three-anda-half seasons, manager.

But the Reds’ disappointing exit from the Trophy against lowerranked Step 4 opposition proved the final straw for Hewson with his side languishing second from bottom of the Evo-Stik Premier division with just three league wins to their name this season.

Hewson had to hold back the tears as he informed the club secretary and directors of his decision to stand down at Ramsbottom’s Riverside Stadium last night before then issuing an emotional pre-prepared statement on social media.

It read: “It is with real sadness that I have decided to part company with a team that has been a big part of my life for so long.

“This has been an extremely hard decision but I know at this time it is in the best interest of the club and players, whom I have the utmost respect for, to bring someone new in to improve current circumstances.

“I can only thank the board, players past and present, fans and club as a whole for giving me the opportunity as a player, coach and manager. It has been a true honour and privilege to captain and manage such a fantastic club and group of players.

“I am and always will remain a true supporter and hope this change brings about much needed improvements.”

Hewson made his debut for Workington on the opening day of the 2003-04 campaign, serving the club for ten seasons and amassing 332 league and cup appearances. His proudest moment saw him score the winning penalty in the promotion play-off shootout against Farsley Celtic which took the Reds into National League North.
