ZANONE RESCUES CITIZENS

- By Ian East

STUART Zanone provided a sting in the tail as Welwyn Garden City scored twice late on in a thrilling 3-3 draw at Didcot Town.

Didcot played the majority of the game at Loop Meadow with ten men and were pegged back dramatically late on.

Callum McNish gave Didcot the lead with a crisp finish before the game changed as Ollie Thomas was shown a straight red card for a lunging challenge on the halfway line.

The contest burst to life in the second half as Didcot were awarded a penalty for a high foot in the box and Sam Barder slotted home from the penalty spot.

Welwyn got back in the game when Zanone headed in unmarked from a corner but Didcot then went further ahead when McNish got his second of the game – his deflected effort seemingly had the game won for the hosts.

However, the visitors got back in the contest with ten minutes to go when substitute Dan Bond found space in the box and slotted in.

And the visitors snatched a draw at the death as Zanone got his second of the game, seizing on Barder’s poor header and tucking away into the net to claim an unlikely draw.

Elsewhere, it could be fair to say that Bedford

Town’s form at the moment is erratic, and their 2-0 victory over

Kidlington was a perfect example.

The Eagles dominated at the start, with the opening goal arriving on 20 minutes as Dan Walker was downed in the area and Tony Mendy dispatched the penalty.

Despite having shots cleared off the line, and the woodwork coming to the rescue for the away side, Kidlington had loads of possession in the last ten minutes, looking for the equaliser.

However, Bedford held firm and finally gained a deserved win when sub Tremayne Charles went on a run that ended with a low shot from the right corner of the area to score and seal the points.

Coleshill overcame a bruising Christmas period to earn a 1-1 draw away against Aylesbury.

The hosts took the lead when Harry Scott made a run down the right and his cross found Carl Tappin unchallenged to head into the net.

Coleshill’s best chance was from a Stuart Hendrie cross that found Joe Halsall at the far post but his volley went wide.

The entertainment marginally improved in the second half but quality was at a premium.

Joe Halsall had a shot saved by keeper Nick Bennion and Harry Scott’s effort was blocked by Town keeper Paul Hathaway’s outstretched hand.

Coleshill broke quicklywhen Matt Gardner flicked on for Liam Molesworth, who passed to Joe Smith to fire home from ten yards with 66 minutes on the clock.

Scott turned and shot just past the far post and he again had a chance to win it in the dying seconds but Hathaway saved.

An evenly contested match with very few clearcut scoring opportunities ended with Barton

Rovers and Yaxley drawing 0-0.

Rovers’ Connor Vincent and Paul Andrews forced point-blank saves from Yaxley keeper James Blake in each half while the visitors’ finishing was wayward all game, and Rovers keeper Gary Malone was seldom called into action.

Benjamin Aghadiuno pounced to earn Aylesbury United a point at

Kempston Rovers, notching late on as the spoils were shared in a 2-2 draw.

Horatio Hirst had given the visitors the lead but in the second period, former MK Dons striker Izale McLeod and Shane Bush put Kempston 2-1 up – but for Aghadiuno’s late leveller. Meanwhile, Dunstable

Town thumped bottom-ofthe-table North Leigh 4-0, Arel Amu and Saul Williams scoring doubles whilst Sutton Coldfield

Town claimed a fine 3-0 victory at Thame United, James Hurst, Ryan Nesbitt and substitute Max McNulty getting the goals.
