BREATH OF FRESH AIR FOR BEN

- By Aidan Jones

BEN TOLLITT took just 22 minutes to reintroduce himself to the National League title race – now he’s set his sights on completing a promotion double.

The 24-year-old winger proved a pivotal part of Tranmere Rovers’ elevation into the Football League last year via a play-off final victory over Boreham Wood last May.

Now, the former Everton scholar is back in the NonLeague higher reaches after joining Graham Barrow’s title hopefuls Wrexham on a short-term loan deal.

Tollitt made his Dragons debut on Boxing Day and registered an immediate impression, coming on as a substitute and scoring the fourth goal in a 5-1 demolition of promotion rivals Salford City.

Relief

And with Barrow’s side just three points behind leaders Leyton Orient going into yesterday, Tollitt is both excited and relieved to be back involved in a promotion race after making just three League Two appearances for the Birkenhead club this season.

“It was good to get back out onto a pitch and play,” said the former Portsmouth man. “When I scored it was a realisation I was still the same player that I was.

“It was a big relief because I had not scored in what felt like ages and hopefully it will lead to me getting more game time. I’ve not really had a proper session, but for the few days the lads have been brilliant and I am really enjoying my time here.

Determined

“I was just watching from the bench and thought to myself, if I get on here, there are loads of gaps that I could run into.

“It was a lovely little onetwo in the middle and I got my goal so it was brilliant, an amazing start.”

Tollitt, however, insists he has not yet thought about making his move to the Racecourse Ground permanent, simply trying to impress Tranmere boss Micky Mellon and earn a new deal at Prenton Park.

“You have to think when you are on loan, that you have to do better than the lads at Tranmere who are playing in your position,” he added.

“[Hopefully] The manager at Tranmere will be keeping an eye on my games to see where I can fit back into his squad.”
