Nat nods home to sink the Seagulls

- By Sam Frost

NAT JARVIS’ second-half header pushed Westonsuper-Mare to the brink of relegation, as Chippenham Town claimed a slender victory at the Woodspring Stadium.

The Bluebirds edged a drab game in Somerset, leaving Marc McGregor’s side ten points from safety and on the verge of falling into the Southern League.

The 90 minutes encapsulated the Seagulls’ miserable campaign, with them bossing possession but devoid of any cutting edge in the final third – and the home supporters vented their frustration en masse at full time.

Weston started brightly and probed the visitors’ back four, but the visitors looked threatening on the counter attack and they almost stung the league’s bottom side with a swift break on 13 minutes.

Home keeper Luke Purnell continued his fine form between the sticks by making a superb oneon-one save from Jarvis and he repeated the trick in the 34th minute to deny Jack Compton.

Jarvis almost opened the scoring with an inventive acrobatic effort six minutes after the interval, but he only had to wait nine more minutes for the breakthrough as he nodded Compton’s wicked cross from the right flank into the far corner.

The Seagulls lacked the required guile to mount a comeback in the latter stages, with visiting stopper Will Puddy barely dirtying his kit. STAR MAN: Jack Compton (Chippenham Town) ENTERTAINMENT: ★★★★★
