Four points clear after hitting four

- By Sam Goldsworthy

IT WAS a crash back down to earth for relegation threatened Micklover Sports as they were thrashed by league leaders Warrington Town at The Don Amott Arena.

An early goal from Yellows striker Tony Gray on the half volley turn lobbed goalkeeper Lewis King to set the tone.

Most of the first half was a low key affair with both sides having very little clear cut chances. This was until three minutes before half time when Jack Mackreth put in some good work on the right wing, beating Ben Turner to the ball, before drilling in a superb low cross for Dylan Vassallo to prod in from close range to make it 2-0 to the visitors from Cheshire.

With only eight minutes of the second half played Mickleover were given a life line when Evan Garnett, who had not scored since November, netted a low drive into the bottom corner.

Warrington goakeeper Anthony McMillan will have felt he could have done better with it but it didn’t matter in the end as just moments later the visitors were awarded a spot kick.

Pablo Mills was adjudged to have brought down danger man Tony Gray in the box which was contested by the Sports players but to no avail.

Up stepped winger Jack Mackreth to power home a thunderous penalty kick into the top left corner just out of the reach of Lewis King who dived the right way but just couldn’t quite get his gloves to it.

The flow of the game was broken up as both sides made substitutions in quick succession, but Warrington never really looked under threat as they kept possession to deny Sports any way back into the game.

Warrington’s fourth and killer blow goal came with twenty minutes to go.

Robert Evans unleashed a terrific strike which went under Sports keeper King and into the bottom left

corner of the net.

Sports player coach Clinton Morrison praised the character of the Sports players and believes his side are in a false position in the standings.

He said: “Knowing the lads as I do they are determined to stay in this league.

“I don’t believe we are a bad side at all.

“All credit to Warrington they are an excellent team and deserve to be top.”

Warrington boss Paul Carden was quick to praise his players after the win that extended their lead at the top of the table to four points following Farsley Celtic’s defeat at Lancaster City.

Carden said: “We have some experienced lads who are determined to see us through and try and win this tough league.”

Warrington are next in action on Saturday at home to Stafford Rangers.
