A FAIR DAY FOR FENMEN

- By Spencer Larham

WISBECH Town put a dent in Sheffield’s hopes of automatic promotion from the Evo-Stik NPL Division One East whilst doing their chances of staying up no harm with a 3-1 win at the Elgoods Fenland Stadium.

Wisbech started brightly and scored with their first corner after eight minutes.

Jon Fairweather, making his 400th appearance for the Fenmen, headed home from Danny Setchell’s corner.

The visitors equalised in first-half stoppage time after a good run by Alfie Eagle finished with his shot deflecting in off defender Adam Millson.

Wisbech regained the lead in the 78th minute when another Setchell corner was headed in by Toby Hilliard and made the game safe almost from kick off when Michael Frew managed to squeeze the ball across the box from right on the byline for Setchell to score with a low shot.

Frickley made their intentions clear right from the off in their 1-1 draw with bottom of the table Gresley.

Two chances for Jacob Hazel in the first five minutes were followed by further chances for the Blues but it was Gresley who took the lead when a speculative shot from Connor Deards flew in from 20 yards.

The home side continued to apply the pressure with a couple of headers wide by Greg Young from corners.

On the half hour mark, Frickley keeper Hugo Warhurst acrobatically clawed away a Gresley drive to keep it at 1-0, and that was how it stayed going into half-time.

After the break, it took less than a minute for Frickley’s Miracle Okafor to poke the ball past Aiden Jeynes in the Gresley net, only for a defender to clear before it could cross the line.

On 65 minutes, it was all square when the ball broke for Hazel who made no mistake crashing the ball home from the edge of the box to earn a point for his side. Brighouse Town's hopes of catching top of the table Morpeth Town were dented as they were 5-2 away at Loughborough Dynamo. Dynamo raced into a 3-0 lead before the half hour mark with Luke Thorogood, Josh Riley and Karl Demidh all finding the back of the net.

But two goals either side of half-time from Aaron Martin and Mohammed Ibrahim brought Brighouse back into the game.

But the game was killed off with two further Dynamo goals from Reuben Asamoah and Ryan Robbins to make sure of the win.

The result leaves Brighouse in second and ten points behind Morpeth. Cleethorpes Town remain in the play-off hunt after a 2-0 win over second from bottom Pickering Town.

After a goalless first half, Cleethorpes took the lead from the penalty spot, with Danny North calmly slotting home from 12 yards.

And the points were wrapped up five minutes from time when Mark Gray found space to make it 2-0.

Tyler Blake scored twice as Carlton Town eased their relegation fears with a 3-1 win over Lincoln United.

Oliver Clark opened the scoring for Carlton after just nine minutes, but Lincoln were level shortly after the half hour when Thomas Garrick levelled for the visitors.

But two goals either side of half time from Blake helped Carlton move up to 26 points and four clear of bottom of the table Gresley.

Elsewhere, Jake Picton goal just before half time was enough for third place

Pontefract Collieries to earn a 1-0 win over AFC Mansfield. Finally, Tadcaster Albion remained in the play-off picture with a 3-0 win over Stocksbridge Park Steels.

Aiden Savory scored twice to keep Albion one point above Ossett United.

Savory gave his side the lead just before half time.

But it took until the 79th minute for the points to be safe as Corey Roper made it 2-0 before Savory grabbed his second.
