TAUNTON PROBED ON BORO TROUBLE

- By Jon Couch

FARNBOROUGH FC have called on league rivals Taunton Town to take immediate action against a handful of fans accused of racially abusing one of their players during an ugly encounter at The Viridor Stadium on Saturday.

The Hampshire club have lodged a complaint to the Football Association and Southern League, and have sought advice from ‘Kick It Out’ after full-back John Oyenuga allegedly received abuse while attempting to take a second-half throw-in, with beer and coins being thrown at him.

Manager Spencer Day also alleges he was confronted after the home side’s 2-1 victory, claiming Taunton’s matchday staff failed to properly deal with the trouble makers in question, who were still drinking in the clubhouse sometime after the incident.

“It’s important we make it clear that we are talking about a miniscule number of idiots here, but I’ve never seen anything like it,” Day told The NLP.

“The officials didn’t help; they were too young and too inexperienced for the occasion and poor decisions given, for both sides, made the crowd vociferous.”

The FA and Southern League are now looking into the matter with Taunton likely to be asked to explain their side of the incident.

A Taunton Town statement, released on Tuesday, read: “We understand that Farnborough FC have made formal representations to the FA and Southern League and we are waiting for the formal response to those representations together with the match referee’s report from Saturday’s match.”
