NOMADS BACK ON TOP OF PREMIER

- By Carl Field

CONNAH’S QUAY NOMADS are back on top of the JD Welsh Premier League – for the time being at least – after a 2-0 victory over Newtown.

Captain George Horan put the Nomads ahead and the points were finally sealed by Michael Bakare’s sweet strike.

The Nomads now turn their attention towards Saturday’s IRN-BRU Scottish Challenge Cup final with Ross County in Inverness.

Elsewhere Bala Town had a 2-0 triumph over Barry Town

United at Jenner Park. Meanwhile this season’s FAW Trophy final will be contested between Pontardawe

Town and Cefn Albion. Albion saw off STM Sports 31 after extra time.

Albion, who ply their trade in the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) Premier Division, also had a man sent off at the end of normal time with the score at 1-1.

And then Pontardawe, also of Welsh League Division Two, put Lock Stock Welsh Alliance club Bodedern Athletic to the sword 5-0.

Tom Blizzard found the net twice within as many first half minutes, the first from the penalty spot and also saw Bodedern keeper Jordan Taylor sent off for bringing down the last man.

Kurtis Rees extended Pontardawe’s lead eight minutes after the re-start and he then added a fourth before Liam Griffiths also got in on the act on 79 minutes.

In Welsh League Division One, Penybont took another step towards the title after seeing off Cwmamman

United 2-0 at Bryntirion. Rhys Griffiths’ side are nine points clear of Cambrian & Clydach at the top with two games in hand.

Airbus UK Broughton now need just four more points from their remaining four matches to be crowned champions of the Huws Gray Alliance.

The Wingmakers moved 12 points clear yesterday following a 3-2 win over Denbigh Town in a match switched to Bala’'s Maes Tegid ground.
