IT SEEMS a long time ago since Aldershot were embedded in the play-off race for the second consecutive year – now they’re plummeting out of the division... and fast!
What Shots fans would give to roll the clock back to this time 12 months ago after witnessing a tenth home defeat of the season, inflicted by Devonte Redmond’s strike on the stroke of half-time.
It gave efficient Salford their fourth consecutive win and clean sheet to maintain their push for the title with eight games to play.
Gary Waddock’s side are now ten points off safety, having won just once in their last 23 matches across all competitions – and on today’s showing it was clear to see why they are the lowest scorers in the division with just 29 goals in the bank.
They passed the ball well, but lacked incisiveness in the final third – the story of their season.
“At half-time you might have thought we had thrown away our main opportunity using the conditions,” said captain Scott Rendell.
“I thought we did very, very well in the second half especially with the ball, but yet again we didn’t find the back of the net.
“A couple of months ago you’d come in and think there’s no performance there, there’s no goals, there’s no passion, there’s no desire, but I think you can’t throw that at us anymore.
“The last four or five games we’ve shown that and maybe we haven’t got the rewards we deserve.”
