SPIREITES EDGE AWAY WITH LATE SHOW

SCOTT BODEN’S dramatic 93rd-minute penalty handed Chesterfield a crucial three points in their bid to beat the drop, while hammering a huge nail in Havant’s chances.

Boden slotted past Ben Dudzinski from the spot after Dan Strugnall was adjudged to have tripped substitute Jerome BinnonWilliams on the edge of the box.

It takes the Spireites eight points clear of the National League relegation zone, whilst piling the pressure on the Hawks, who now lie six points from safety.

The visitors were chasing the game after only 12 minutes when a corner by Chris Paul sailed over the head of keeper Shwan Jalal and in off the far post.

The Spireites came back strongly but poor finishing by Tom Denton saw him fluff three good chances whilst Boden had a fierce header well saved.

Chesterfield struck back after the interval when Ellis Chapman floated a brilliant free-kick into the Hawks’ box and skipper Will Evans planted a superb header past keeper Dudzinski to bring the Spireites level.

Jalal saved well from Alfie Rutherford two minutes into injury time before drama at the other end saw Boden put the visitors in front.

Still, there was time for more excitement when Hawks’ substitute Matt Paterson appeared to be dragged down in the box as he was about to pull the trigger but referee Savvas Yianni waved away Hawks’ protests for a penalty. “Everyone saw it but nothing was given,” said Hawks boss Lee Bradbury. “How the referee didn’t give it I’ll never know. It’s been a difficult day but we’ll continue to fight against relegation until it’s no longer possible. “This was a massive loss but we did enough to get something from the game. “The wind spoiled the game and the result is really tough to take.” Spireites assistant manager Glyn Snodin added: “We controlled the game in the first half and did everything but score a goal. We got the ball into the box regularly and were unlucky to turn round 1-0 down. “Conditions were demanding out there, but we adapted very well. In the end we got the winner from the penalty spot to get an important victory that makes the league table all that much sweeter from our perspective. “We’re now eight points clear of the bottom four but no one will relax as we want to finish as high as we can and get up that table. “It’s all about continuing to work hard for each other. We have a fantastic bunch of lads and if they continue to believe in themselves then we’ll continue to win games and climb the table.”
