SEADOGS HIT BACK TO GIVE DEACEY A LIFT

Son Jordan bags winner at United

- By Ben Hughes

DELIGHTED Scarborough Athletic boss John Deacey hailed his players’ battling performance after his son Jordan notched the winner at FC United.

Scarborough came into the game reeling from a 5-1 defeat at Stalybridge Celtic in midweek. They fluffed a great chance to take a second minute lead when James Walshaw missed from the spot, but Jordan Deacey then netted a 27th minute winner to leave the hosts still searching for their first point of the campaign.

A satisfied John Deacey said: “We were just looking for a reaction from Tuesday night, and I think I got that reaction.

“It was a battling performance, we got the goal in front, and restricted FC to very few chances.

“They had a little bit of pressure, a little bit of possession, but I didn’t think they turned it into chances. It was a good job done away from home at FC United, where teams

will find it difficult to come.”

The game started in controversial style, with Scarborough securing a chance from the penalty spot after just 90 seconds. Referee Darren Strain judged a challenge from Curtis Jones on Michael Coulson to be worthy of a penalty. However, Walshaw put the resulting spot-kick over the bar.

It took FC United 20 minutes to create their first chance, with rightback Curtis Jones moving forward into midfield and producing a through ball for lone striker Chris Sharp to shoot from an angle over the bar from 12 yards.

Walshaw was denied by FC United keeper Paddy Wharton before the Seadogs got their reward in the 27th minute.

A corner from Watson created havoc in the FC United penalty area and a scramble ensued. Eventually, Jordan Deacey managed to get the ball over the line.

On 38 minutes, Wharton produced a fine oneon-one save at the feet of Walshaw, but goal chances for either side would be few and far between all afternoon, as FC United struggled to find any form of rhythm.

Manager Neil Reynolds tried to alter things at half-time with a double substitution, but they remained restricted to shots from distance and half chances.
