SPIREITES FIND THEIR WAY BACK
CHESTERFIELD came from two goals down to snatch their first home point of the season.
A disastrous first half saw the Spirerites two goals down after 25 minutes with no sign of getting back into the game.
Chesterfield were creating their own problems at the back with sloppy passes that would often find Barrow men.
But Brad Barry didn’t need the help of the Chesterfield defence as he opened the scoring with a thunderous strike into the top right corner.
Just seven minutes later Barrow had doubled their lead, a low corner from Oliver Greaves picked out Scott Quigley wide open in the box and he converted his fourth goal in four games.
Barrow continued to control proceedings throughout the half, with Chesterfield seeming to just punt the ball up field when they finally got possession.
But Chesterfield managed to steal a goal just before the end of the half. Jermaine McGlashan broke into the Barrow box but was brought down by Connor Brown.
Scott Boden stepped up to the spot and slotted it into the bottom right to keep his side in the game.
Barrow manager Ian Evatt was frustrated that his side couldn’t extend their lead before the break and felt they deserved a lot more.
Evatt said: “No exaggeration, we should have been seven up at halftime. The way we played in the first half was outstanding.
“There’s that nagging doubt in the back of our minds after conceding, just thinking here we go again, it’s a learning curve for a very young team.”
Chesterfield were much improved in the second half, with the introduction of Joe Rowley and Josef Yarney seeming to give Chesterfield a boost.
Mike Fondop had multiple chances to level for his side, with two headers going comfortably into the arms of Joel Dixon.
But it was Fondop who would find the breakthrough. David Buchanan put an excellent cross into the box for Fondop, who managed to power it into the
bottom right with just ten minutes to go.
But the drama didn’t end there, McGlashan’s excellent dribbling saw him break into the Barrow box once again before rounding the goalkeeper. All he had to do was tap it home but he appeared to be brought down in the box.
However, the referee deemed that McGlashan had dived much to the outrage of Spirites fans.
Despite managing to steal a point, Spireites boss John Sheridan was disappointed with his side’s first-half performance.
“We we’re abysmal in the first half, it could honestly have been five for them but we were lucky,” he said.
“I’m hoping that us managing to come back like that will be a turning point, three games at home this season and no wins is not good enough.”
