Referee ignores Trinity prayers

GAINSBOROUGH T 0 WARRINGTON TN 0

A WATCHABLE game somehow ended goalless in Lincolnshire as Gainsborough and Warrington cancelled each other out in the sunshine.

The main talking points of the first half centred around refereeing decisions, both going against Trinity’s leading marksman, Ashley Worsfold.

First referee David Jones waved away a penalty appeal after a deft touch by Gavin Allott.

Six minutes later and with Worsfold primed, ready to pull the trigger, he was taken out by last man James McCarten.

With everyone in the ground expecting a red card, the Wire centreback breathed a huge sigh of relief, as a caution was the only punishment.

Joe Maguire’s free-kick was then well hit, but did not trouble Tony McMillan. Good play from Wire’s Ben Garrity fed Tony Gray and his through ball found Alex Byrne, who couldn’t curl an effort on target.

In the second half, a five-man Trinity attack ended with Kingsley James firing over as Warrington put bodies on the line.

Louis Barnes rifled into the side-netting when Matty Chadwick’s freekick cannoned back to the full-back.

Ross Hannah went close soon after coming on as substitute for Trinity but, leaning back, he couldn’t hit the target from Allott’s cut-back.

Wire sub Josh Amiss then headed over from Mitchell Duggan’s centre, before Maguire saw his header roll agonisingly wide of the far post in stoppage time.
