FED HOLD FIRM AS UNITED MISS OUT

- By Tony Cleugh

DUNSTON took the lead three times and held on when it mattered most as they edged out Ossett

United 3-2 in an end-toend thriller to progress in the FA Trophy.

The match started in frantic fashion as Dunston’s Scott Heslop put the home side in front after just three minutes, but Ossett responded in impressive fashion and Jack Vann equalised seven minutes later.

The second half started much the same as the first as Dunston scored early, Craig Scott delivering a great cross to Mark Fitzpatrick who calmly headed home to put Dunston in front again.

Ossett fought back immediately however, and levelled proceedings once again shortly after through an impressive strike from Nick Guest.

Mark Fitzpatrick put the home side in front with 12 minutes go from the penalty spot, and Dunston rode their luck to hold on as Tom Grieves missed an open goal to equalise in the dying moments for the visitors.

Elsewhere, George Hassall scored a hat-trick as

Prescot Cables produced a perfect away performance to beat Clitheroe

3-0.

Having survived a period of opening pressure from Clitheroe, the visitors took the lead after a wonderful counter-attack as Lloyd Dean’s squared pass found Hassall to finish first time.

Cables made it two just five minutes before half time after another break down the right wing, James Edgar seeing his shot saved only for the ball to rebound to Hassall who was on hand to tap home into the empty net.

Hassall sealed his hattrick on the hour mark as James Edgar produced a perfect cross for the Cables’ number nine to head home and seal his side’s passage through to the next round.

It was rather less comfortable for Carlton Town as they withstood a late

Bedford Town charge to win 3-2 in a match they appeared to be cruising in.

Tyler Blake put the hosts in front after just five minutes, before Aaron Opoku doubled Carlton’s lead after the break.

Tom Maddison made it 3-0 from the spot with 15 minutes to go after Ben Ford had been sent off for handball as Bedford appeared to be on their way to a heavy defeat.

But goals from Thomas Hitchcock and then Brett Longden made it 3-2, the home side surviving a nervy last five minutes as the ten-men of Bedford fell just short of a miraculous comeback.

Worksop Town survived some late pressure to win 2-1 as Kendal Town lost for the tenth time in 14 games this season in all competitions.

After a largely uneventful first half, Worksop took the lead after 56 minutes in superb style as Connor Brunt scored a wonderful free-kick.

Kieran Maguire’s own goal six minutes later doubled the home side’s lead and while Lewis Wainwright halved the deficit with five minutes to go, it was not enough to prevent another disappointing day for Kendal this season.

And early goals at the start of both halves sent

Pontefract Collieries on their way to a 2-0 win over

Glossop North End and

into the next round.

Connor Smythe drilled home after six minutes to put the home side in front, and Vaughan Redford doubled the advantage from Jack Greenhough’s cross two minutes into the second-half.

Greenhough’s volley smashed against the post shortly after, before Glossop substitute Joel Mills was sent off on the touchline to round off a miserable day for the visitors, who want to forget this.
