HYTHE TORMENTED BY OLD

- By Martin Whybrow

ASHFORD UNITED cruised to a 4-1 victory in the Isthmian League South Kent derby at

Hythe Town.

The goals were flying in for the first quarter of an hour with Lee Prescott firing home a cross from former Hythe right-back Jerald Aboagye.

Tom Walmsley then equalised on 14 minutes but that was as good as it got for Hythe.

Parity lasted less than a minute, with Ollie Rowe turning the ball into his own goal under pressure from David Smith. And Ashford largely dominated the second half and were rewarded with goals from another Hythe old boy, Jay May, who tapped in after Will Godmon had saved a good longrange effort from Josh Wisson.

Aaron Condon added the fourth after 75 minutes and the host’s miserable afternoon ended with Alex Flisher sent off for a second yellow as full-time loomed.

Meanwhile VCD Athletic and Haywards Heath played out a 2-2 draw after a dreary first 45 minutes.

It took a terrible misjudgment by Heath defender Henry Watson, who put the ball past his own keeper, to give the Vickers a half-time lead.

The second half began much in the same way until Trevor McCreadie was put through and calmly slotted the ball past Matt Funnell.

With the wind in their sails, Heath began to push and Kieran Rowe put them in front, but the Vickers were quick to respond when Ali Fuseini put the game back on even terms.

With the match now being played at a faster pace, it could have gone either way, but neither side was able to put together the important move that could have settled the game.

Burgess Hill Town came back after going behind in the first minute of the game to beat Sittingbourne 2-1 and move eight points clear of the drop zone.

No sooner had the game kicked off did the ball ricochet off the post from a vicious freekick and into the path of Ben Fitchett to put Sittingbourne ahead.
