NOW ROBINS ARE BOBBIN’

Greaves has led Frome turnaround

- By Mark Stillman

FROME TOWN are living proof that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

In April 2018, they lost 7-0 at Gosport Borough, a match where they could only field 10 players amid financial concerns.

A month later, new manager Danny Greaves arrived following a successful stint at Bradford Town and walked into a tricky environment.

“It was a very dark and negative place. The club had their troubles prior to me going in,” Greaves told The

NLP.

“We were all realistic when I arrived. Our objective last year was to stay up.

“Even though we were relegated, what we were producing on the pitch wasn’t horrendous. There were some positive signs.”

Now, 18 months on, the scale of the turnaround was underlined with an 8-0 thumping of Basingstoke Town last week – a result which sent the Robins flying up to the top of the BetVictor Southern Division One South table.

“Even as a player I don’t remember being involved in a game like that,” added Greaves. “It could have been more, that’s not being disrespectful to Basingstoke.

Ruthless

“The week before we played Moneyfields and drew 2-2 when we should have had six or seven.

“I said to the boys before the Basingstoke game that we need to be ruthless. In other games this season we’ve been two or three-nil up and taken our foot off the pedal. On Saturday we were full throttle for 90 minutes.”

The Robins haven’t looked back since their eight-year sojourn at Step 3 ended with relegation in May.

Greaves has had the backing of the board in the summer and been allowed to keep a large bulk of his squad.

“The club’s aspirations in the summer we totally different to last year.” said Greaves. “It’s in a much better shape than it was just before I came in. It’s not exactly plain sailing but I don’t think it is for anyone at this level.

“In the summer when we started signing players, there was more of a feel-good factor around the place and that’s gone from strength to strength.

“Those players, eight or nine of them, which stayed after relegation saw the positive things, the stuff going on behind the scenes.

“When we kept them, I knew we’d do well this season. We felt we had a really good mix and added to it with quality players who’ve been there and done it at this level, some with Frome.

“Another massive change from last year is the atmosphere. In the stands it’s a lot better, which helps the players on a matchday. It’s a much more enjoyable place to be at.”
