All yesterday’s action from the National Leagues

- By Tony Dolbear

SUTTON UNITED shrugged off the absence of in-form striker Omar Bugiel to record a third consecutive National League win and end Yeovil’s own seven-match unbeaten run.

Bugiel, who had scored five goals in the previous wins against Wrexham and Woking, missed the game after his partner gave birth to a baby girl in the early hours.

But with confidence high after their recent run U’s still prevailed against a side who would have gone temporarily top of the league with a point.

David Ajiboye proved the match winner with a second half strike, and it was the pacey winger who set U’s on their way after 24 minutes when he dispossessed Myles Hippolyte and raced away down the left before squaring a pass across goal to give Harry Beautyman a simple finish for his tenth league goal of the season.

But Yeovil, who scored six in a Boxing Day thumping over western rivals Torquay, were back level within two minutes as a mix-up between Ben Goodliffe and Jon Barden allowed Rhys Murphy to force the ball past Nik Tzanev in the U’s goal.

The Glovers then went in front seven minutes before the break, albeit fortuitously, when a low shot from Courtney Duffus clipped Albi Skendi on the heel and looped over the helpless Tzanev.

This time it was U’s turn to respond immediately, though, as Aaron Jarvis, taking the chance given by Bugiel’s absence, fired across goal following a free-kick and the ball fell for Goodliffe to score his first goal in Sutton colours.

Yeovil came close to retaking the lead at the start of the second half when Duffus ran on to a perfect pass from Hippolyte and shot past Tzanev but, with the visiting supporters already celebrating, the ball came back off the inside of the post and Rob Milsom’s intervention denied Duffus the chance of scoring from the rebound. As it was, it was U’s who scored what proved to be the winner just after the hour. Tommy Wright chased a long pass and, under pressure from Gabriel Osho and goalkeeper Stuart Nelson, forced the ball away to Ajiboye, who rolled it in to the empty net.

Tzanev made one superb save to tip over a shot from Lawson D’Ath, but otherwise U’s gave the visitors little chance of an equaliser and continued their fine recent run.

Assistant manager Jason Goodliffe said: ‘’I don’t think we played as well as we have in some games recently, but it was a great reward for the lads’ resilience and it rounds off a superb week.’’

Yeovil boss Darren Sarll saw it as a missed opportunity, adding: ‘’We weren’t close to the level we needed to be, and when that happens you make the sort of mistakes we made that cost us goals.’’
