EBBSFLEET United advanced despite playing the majority of the game with ten men for the second successive match, following Andre Blackman’s sending off.

Blackman saw red for his part in an off-the-ball incident midway through the first half.

But, unlike the seven-goal thrashing at Barrow this week, Fleet kept their shape and organisation and saw off the in-form National League North leaders thanks to a coolly-taken second-half penalty from substitute Ayo Obileye.

“I’m delighted on the back of last week,” said Ebbsfleet manager Kevin Watson. “We were all disappointed with our performances at Barrow, including myself.

“But going down to 10 men again, playing a team that’s won 11 out of 13 in their division, we defended well.

“We’ve done a lot of work with the back four this week in training, being strong and closing gaps and they carried it out to the letter.”

The game was hardly bad tempered but card-happy referee Adrian Quelch was never far away from the action.

The red card came out on 23 minutes when a foul by Lynn’s Ryan Jarvis on Josh Payne sparked a melee near the touchline and Blackman was blamed, while Jarvis went unpunished.

“I have my thoughts on the red card,” explained Watson. “Raising your arm to brush off someone’s hand who has grabbed hold of you shouldn’t be a sending-off.”

Ebbsfleet, who had made five changes from the Barrow loss, kept their shape well against a confident Lynn side who also were forced into changes after some of their players were delayed in traffic on the A1.

Lynn could have led inside five minutes but Adam Marriott shot wide from close range after new Fleet keeper David Gregory pushed away Ross Barrows’ header.

Ebbsfleet’s Lawrie Wilson had to clear from near his own line just past the halfhour but the threat from the visitors decreased as the game wore on despite their numerical advantage.

The hosts soaked up the pressure and looked to break on the counter. One such move led to the breakthrough as Josh Umerah took advantage of a slip by the returning Chris Smith in the Lynn defence and referee Quelch pointed to the spot when he was upended in the area. Obileye stepped up and casually sent keeper Alex Street the wrong way.

Michael Gash failed to have much impact against his former club after coming off the bench for the visitors, who were unable to register a shot on target during the second half.

Lynn boss Ian Culverhouse said: “We lacked a bit of quality in the final third. Fair play to Ebbsfleet, they banked up really well and hit us on the break. “They managed the game well with ten men – I thought we looked better when it was 11 versus 11, we got into good spaces.”
