QUINTON BACK TO PREVENT WINGS FALLING

- By David Richardson

BRADLEY Quinton is ready to lead a Welling United rescue mission after being handed the reins by owner-chairman Mark Goldberg.

Just two wins in 12 National League South games has dragged the Wings into a relegation scrap.

Goldberg appointed himself as manager for the second time in the summer after parting ways with Steve King following their play-off final defeat.

But now the former Bromley boss has axed himself, having missed three games over the Christmas period for a family holiday, including two derby defeats to King’s Dartford, which drew criticism from supporters.

He’s called in Quinton, one of NonLeague’s up-and-coming managers, who took Braintree into the National League via the play-offs in 2018, to get them out of trouble.

“It’s pleasing to be back,” Quinton told The NLP. “I’ve been out doing some stuff for some clubs. I went in at Reading with Steve Shorey, he welcomed me in and looked at some sessions. It’s fantastic to have contacts like that; I appreciate what he’s done for me. Alan Dowson at Woking as well, I’ve been doing some scouting reports for and looking at players. I’ve been keeping involved. I’d like to thank everyone who’s been in touch.

“I had opportunities to take over elsewhere but it wasn’t right. I had my mind set on going into a club I could put my stamp on it.”

Welling sat above the bottom two only on goal difference yesterday – and the objective for Quinton is to make sure they’re still a National League South club at the end of the season.

“My aim first and foremost is to get this club away from the danger area and then to move it forward to where it should be,” he added. “Mark has been in touch numerous times trying to sign me as a player over the years. We kept in touch and discussed things, and on Tuesday he offered me the job.

“I’ll request players give 100 per cent. If anyone wants to leave and doesn’t want to play for me and the club they can.”
