IT’S ANOTHER SEVEN-GOAL SHOW FOR BLUEBIRDS

- By Matt Wright

MANAGER Ian Evatt saw Barrow side put their opponents to the sword with a seven-goal show for the second Saturday running after they stormed past in-form FC United at Holker Street.

The visitors had been unbeaten in their last 15 games prior to their trip to Cumbria, but the National League leaders simply had too much firepower for them to cope with.

This was FC United’s biggest defeat in their relatively short history and it fully justified Evatt’s decision to name a strong line-up, having fielded his fringe players in Tuesday’s first round replay against Atherton Collieries.

It certainly was a stunning follow-up to them hammering Ebbsfleet by the same scoreline the previous week.

Evatt said: “I hope the paying public don’t think that’s going to happen every week and that we’re going to blow teams away by seven.

“The most pleasing thing for me is that we’re developing that ruthless, clinical side.

“Seven today could have been a lot more if we’d have just chosen that final decision or final pass a little bit better, but I was pleased with how fit we looked, especially second half when the pitch got really heavy and the weather etc.”

FC United had the chance to go ahead when their main marksman Tunde Owolabi had a clear chance well saved by Barrow goalkeeper Joel Dixon.

It was all the home side from then on, however, as Brad Barry opened the scoring by slotting through Cameron Belford’s legs after being set up by Scott Quigley.

Josh Kay doubled the Bluebirds’ lead when he bundled in Barry’s low cross at the second time of asking before Quigley’s cut-back gave John Rooney an easy tapin to make it 3-0 before half-time.

Rooney had his second when he chipped in from the penalty spot after Kay had been brought down by Aaron Morris and Byron Harrison then got in on the act when he shouldered in Patrick Brough’s cross.

FC United then had defender Chris Doyle sent off for handling Olly Dyson’s goal-bound effort, but Harrison had his penalty saved by Belford.

The goals kept on flowing for Barrow, however, as Morris tackled the ball into his own net as Dior Angus prepared to shoot, before Angus got one for himself after being played through by Lewis Hardcastle.

FC United boss Neil Reynolds said: “They’re absolutely exceptional, I’ve learned a lot today. Ian Evatt has got a wonderful side.

“It was a big compliment to us that he played virtually the same team that beat Ebbsfleet last week, but sometimes in football you’ve just got to say ‘well done.’”
