Jeffers is the goal hero for ruthless City

- By Mark Tuxford

SHAUN Jeffers scored twice as Chelmsford City ran out comfortable winners against Salisbury with Jonny Giles and Chris Whelpdale also on the scoresheet.

And boss Rod Stringer was delighted with his display of his Clarets side as they avoided the banana skin of a Salisbury side, who put out another National League South club in Eastbourne Borough just four days previous.

“I’m really proud of the boys today and we’re through to the next round of the cup so it’s a good day at the office for us,” Stringer said ahead of tomorrow’s last 16 draw. Let’s see how far we can go and who we get into the next round.”

Chelmsford dominated early possession and it was Jeffers who grabbed the opener on 29 minutes when he was put through on goal with only keeper

Marcus Beauchamp to beat, making no mistake.

Steve Claridge’s Salisbury side, from BetVictor Southern Premier South, held firm but, in truth, City upped the ante in the second period.

Giles lashed home from the edge of the box on 75 minutes, bamboozling the goalkeeper and doubling his side’s advantage.

Chelmsford were not done yet as they made sure of victory with a final ten-minute masterclass.

Jeffers got his second of the game on 86 minutes when he met Chez Issac’s pin-point cross from the right which landed perfectly for the striker to nod home and grab goal number three.

And winger-turnedfull-back Whelpdale secured City’s place in the third round with cool finish into the bottom corner for virtually the last kick of the game to make it four.

In truth, Chelmsford were fully deserving of their win and but fort Beauchamp’s excellent double save followed by tips over the bar and other smart saves, then scoreline could have been into double figures.
