MINSTERMEN LEAVE IT LATE BUT CLOSE IN ON LEADERS

- By John Featherstone

YORK CITY kept a 15th clean sheet of the season but left it late to secure a comfortable home win over Telford.

Former Macclesfield midfielder Elliott Durrell opened his account for the Minstermen with virtually his first kick of the game after entering the fray as an 80th-minute substitute.

A more familiar candidate to find the net – top-scorer Jordan Burrow – then wrapped up matters with a minute of normal time remaining, claiming his 13th goal of the campaign and fifth in as many fixtures.

The result saw York close the gap at the top of the table on leaders King’s Lynn to a single point ahead of the two clubs meeting at The Walks next weekend.

Telford’s defeat, meanwhile, hailed an end to their best undefeated away run of results since 2014, as Gavin Cowan’s men lost on the road for the first time in six trips.

York looked the stronger side throughout, although Shane Sutton’s header bounced narrowly wide for the visitors on 17 minutes.

But Yates was at full stretch to keep out a long-range Sean Newton drive and the home defender went close with another effort from distance before Burrow was denied by the Bucks’ net-minder.

Durrell belatedly broke the deadlock at Bootham Crescent within a minute of climbing off the bench, bundling in a scrambled effort at the far post.

The hosts then bagged a deserved second goal when Burrow beat Telford keeper Matt Yates to a long ball forward and managed to direct his shot between the posts from a narrow angle.
