BRAD STARS FOR LEADERS IN A BATTLE OF THE REDS

- By David Preistley

WORKINGTON consolidated their position at the top of the North West division of the BetVictor Northern Premier league with a comprehensive win over lower mid-table outfit Colne.

Colne held their own in the opening half-hour with some good defending to keep the visitors at bay.

However, they conceded a needless corner after 37 minutes and when the resulting cross reached the far post, Bradley Carroll forced the ball home to give Workington the lead.

Colne looked for an equaliser before half-time but Eli Hey saw his shot on the turn fly just wide of visiting goalkeeper Jim Atkinson’s far post.

The break seemed to rejuvenate the league leaders as, in the first minute of the second half, Workington doubled their lead when Scott Allison met a low cross to fire home his side’s second goal

Nathan Waterson joined the game from the subs bench in place of Scorr Allison on the hour and within a minute added a third goal.

He picked up a loose backpass from the home defence and stroked the ball calmly into the empty net.

Colne fought hard to reduce the arrears in the steadily worsening conditions with Hey shooting just wide from a good chance.

But Workington were in no mood to let the lead slip and almost added a fourth goal in the final minute when Bradley Hubbold forced a great save from Hakan Burton, who impressively turned his shot round the post.

Victory maintains Workington’s one-point lead over Ramsbottom atop the table.
